MANAGING PROJECTS

Projects represent nonroutine business activities that often have long-term strategic ramifications for a firm. In this chapter, we examined how projects differ from routine business activities and discussed the major phases of projects. We noted how environmental changes have resulted in increased attention being paid to projects and project management over the past decade. Learning and Development

This chapter has covered broad ground, from the individual experience of learning, through learning and development as an organisational process and then as a national process. For example, the chapter has discussed:
Learning and development are of strategic importance to organisations, and of high importance to the broader economy, reflected in organisational plans and government policies.
There are many definitions of ‘learning’ and ‘development’ and many ways in which learning and development can play out in organisations.
Learning and development are significant for individuals.
Adult learners have particular expectations of, and requirements from, learning and development opportunities.
Theories of learning provide explanations of how learning takes place and assistance in optimising the effectiveness of organisational learning interventions.
In organisations, the planned process of learning and development includes: identifying learning needs, aims and objectives; determining learning strategies; planning and implementation; and evaluation.
E-learning, or online learning, has grown exponentially in the last few years, with new supportive technologies to enhance the experience, but also to pose skills challenges for learners and facilitators alike.
The national context of learning and development – or government skills policy – has a significant impact on the quality and impact of learning and development in organisations.
